Meet the Team

Richard Cox

RICHARD COX

Richard Cox has been involved with healthcare communications for more than 35 years. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Journalism. In addition to his work as a freelance medical writer, he has been the public information officer for a 1,000-bed non-profit hospital, the USC School of Medicine, and – since 1996 – the Health District of Northern Larimer County, a public agency that provides dental, mental health, preventive health, and advance care planning services, in addition to connecting people to more affordable prescription and insurance options. He has hosted Community at Work since 2004. In his free time, he likes to hike, bike, camp, read, play bass, and explore local and family history. A resident of Fort Collins since 1995, he is married with two grown children.

Deni LaRue

DENI LA RUE

Deni has had two careers. She worked as an award-winning professional radio broadcaster in commercial and public radio and then as the Public Information Director for Larimer County Government. Deni has an undergraduate Journalism degree and M.S. in Technical Communication, both from CSU. In addition to volunteering at KRFC since 2003, Deni has given her time to many local projects including the passage of Larimer County’s Open Space sales tax, the Gardens on Spring Creek, the Sunny Side Singers, various Boards and Commissions, and local cable T.V, to name a few.

Deni began her radio career as a late-night free-form rock ‘n roll DJ and feels so lucky to be able to volunteer at KRFC in her love of radio and community. Deni is married to Big/Grateful Steve, another veteran KRFC volunteer.
You can catch Deni on the airwaves Fridays and Saturdays from 8am-10am, and as a team member for KRFC’s Live@Lunch and Public Affairs show Community at Work.

Fun fact: Deni was the first DJ on KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins’ airwaves on Saturday, March 1, 2003!

NATALIE SHREWSBURY

Natalie is the host of both KRFC’s World Fusion show, and the public affairs show Community at Work. Hosting the world fusion show excites her as this genre is full of energy, culture, diversity and reveals many surprises. Natalie’s Community at Work programs often focus upon natural resource issues and the agencies that address these. Most of all she enjoys delving into meaningful topics that impact us and talking with folks who are truly making a difference in our communities.

Aside from hosting and preparing shows for KRFC and KGNU, she’s often found patrolling the wilderness areas with the Poudre Wilderness Volunteers, leading wildflower hikes for Larimer County, paddling the local lakes, adventuring with her partner, and chasing chickens, bees, and a vibrant cat.

Betsy Perna

BETSEY PERNA

Betsy Perna got her start in radio sometime back in the early ’90s, as she worked professionally at KCSU 90.5 FM—all while she took about 10 years to complete some degrees!! At some point during a school board or city council meeting, the news bug bites hard; and she’s still rolling with it at KRFC!! For her, volunteering in community radio is a passion! As well, after retiring from Thompson School District, she hasn’t lost the bug for teaching either. Only, these days it’s all about being a naturalist for Larimer County and the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas. As well, she teaches yoga and fitness classes, part-time.

BRIAN WOODRUFF

Brian caught the radio bug in high school producing “Teen Thirty,” a weekly program on the American Forces Network AM station in Frankfurt, Germany.  Because AFN Frankfurt broadcast at a staggering 150 kilowatts, the show got fan mail from places like Paris, Vienna, and Prague.  After a stint managing campus radio station WYSO in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and producing original radio plays, he interned at Gotham Recording Corporation in New York City.  Something else happened for the next forty years or so, and in retirement Brian is back in radio, happily producing public affairs programming at KRFC.
